At the station, after verifying her identity, Daniela spokeโwith tired but firm eyes:
โPleaseโฆ let me tell the truth. But I beg youโespecially you, mother-in-lawโto listen to me before you judge.โ
Everyone nodded. The room fell silent.
She began with a name: Luis.
โLuis isโฆ my younger brother. But we have never been publicly acknowledged as siblings.โ
I froze.
Daniela explained: her mother had worked as a domestic worker for a wealthy family in San Luis Potosรญ. When Daniela was four, her mother had a relationship with her employerโand thatโs how Luis was born. When the relationship was discovered, she was fired. They returned to a distant town, with nothing. Luis grew up without a father, without legal papers, and with little education.
โNow he fixes refrigerators and air conditioners. But he got into debt with loan sharks. They threatened him. He fled to Mexico City with nowhere to go. I was the only thing he had left.โ
A week after they were married, Luis called her desperately.
โI couldnโt rent. I couldnโt sleep on the street. He begged me to let him stay for a few days.โ
